I just had an epiphany listening to a Dennis Prager talk.
There is a song called "I'd love to change the World" -- and there's a line in the song that goes "Tax the rich, feed the poor 'Til there are no rich no more" and that line always bothered me. I always use to sing it differently: "Tax the rich, feed the poor 'Til there are no POOR no more".
In the past few years I've been going through a crisis of political "faith" (as opposed to a crisis of religious faith) and I've gone from believing myself to be a socialist to considering myself to be a conservative. I even started writing this blog called "Newly Republican" and part of this started when my BFF told me I wasn't a leftist (socialist) I was a liberal. I didn't realize there was a difference.
So back to Dennis Prager -- he was talking about how Hugo Chavez (Yimah Shmo) had kept his promise of equality which was important to him, by getting rid of the rich. And that's when it hit me -- that line in the song sung the group's way is leftist -- equality is their "raison d'etre" whereas my way of singing it is Liberal -- I was there to be no more poor people -- I want prosperity for all. And that is Capitalism.
